Friends visit me in Seoul every year and ask the same questions in the taxi from the airport. Here are the answers, so you can ask better ones.

1. Google Maps will not get you there
It shows the city but cannot route you on foot or by car. Download Naver Map (English interface) or Kakao Map before you land. Both do subway, bus, and walking.
2. Buy a T-money card at the first convenience store you see
CU, GS25, 7-Eleven, all sell it. Load it with cash at the counter or at subway machines. It pays for subway, bus, taxis, and the convenience store itself.
3. Taxis: Kakao T
Hailing on the street works, but the Kakao T app shows the fare and avoids the language gap. Taxis are honest and cheap by US standards.
4. Translation: Papago
Naver's Papago is better than Google Translate for Korean, and the camera mode reads menus and ingredient lists.
5. No tipping, anywhere
Not restaurants, not taxis, not hotels. Trying to tip creates an awkward moment. The price is the price.
6. Plugs are 220V, type C or F
Bring one adapter. Phone chargers and laptops handle the voltage; US hair tools usually do not.
7. Tax refund is real money
Carry your passport when you shop. Many stores, including Olive Young, do an instant refund at the register. Otherwise the kiosks at Incheon handle it; allow 20 extra minutes.
8. Convenience stores are a food group
Triangle kimbap, banana milk, egg sandwiches, instant ramyeon with a hot-water station. Locals eat here. You should too.
9. Entry rules change
Check the official K-ETA website for your passport before you fly. Requirements have been waived and reinstated several times; do not rely on a blog post, including this one.
The skincare bit
You will walk into an Olive Young within an hour of arriving. Read the three-day itinerary first so you know what to look for, and remember we ship the same bottles from Virginia if your suitcase is full.
