Toner, essence, serum, ampoule: what each one is for

Layering ladder: toner, essence, serum, ampoule, cream

These four words cause more wasted money than anything else in Korean skincare. They are not four mandatory steps. They are four textures, and you layer thin to thick.

Layering ladder from thinnest to thickest: toner, essence, serum, ampoule, cream

Toner

Water-thin. Hydrates and preps. Use it every day, morning and night. In Korea a toner is never the alcohol stuff that stings. Anua Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner and Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Toner are the two best-sellers for a reason: one calms, one does nothing but hydrate.

Essence

A little thicker, usually fermented or extract-based, meant to be patted in with the hands. Essences are the most Korean category of all. Snail 96 is technically an essence. So is Mixsoon Bean Essence, which has four fermented ingredients and no water.

Serum

Concentrated and targeted: brightening, pores, fine lines. Usually a dropper bottle. Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum is a serum built around propolis and niacinamide.

Ampoule

The most concentrated of the four, often one hero ingredient at a high percentage. SKIN1004 Centella Ampoule is centella and very little else. Ampoules are for a problem you want to solve, not a daily default.

Do you need all four?

No. Toner plus one of the other three is a complete routine. Two treat steps is the maximum before they start fighting each other. If you own all four, alternate them by night instead of stacking.
